For feeders on poles, use cooking spray to spray the pole ....the squirrels will slide right down and not harm the squirrels.

I am a teacher, and every spring we make pine cone bird feeders. We take a pine cone and spread shortening on it. Then we roll it in wild bird seed food. The kids take them home and report on how many birds came to visit.

To keep ants from getting into your bird feeder spread a little Vaseline on the hanger and they wont pass over it!

When I run out of suet for my suet feeder, I make an inside-out peanut butter sandwich on whole grain or wheat bread, then put it in the suet feeder. The birds love it, especially if you use crunchy peanut butter!
